Audiosurf is a puzzle/rhythm combined video game developed by Dylan Fitterer for Valve Corporation using Quest 3D game engine. It was released on 15 February, 2008 for Microsoft Windows PC only. It is the first game to use Valve’s Steamworks technology. The game can be played in single player mode or players can opt for multiplayer play supporting 2 players in co-operative play. It has won several awards from the gaming community. Users also get an entire soundtrack of the Orange Box as a free download with it. There is Audiosurf demo. Audiosurf demo is available but for download through Steam only. That means first you need to install steam client and then look for Audiosurf demo there.

The gameplay endorse puzzles at the chords of music. Player is supposed to collect several colored blocks in synchronization with the music through several lanes. Player is given the control of the craft using which he can collect colored blocks in order to score points. The spaceship like craft can be controlled by mouse or using arrow keys of the keyboard. The gameplay is said to be affected from games like Wipeout, F-Zero and Klax. The music played in the Audiosurf is chosen from the user’s own library. Along with this, music can also be played from the Orange Box free soundtracks given with the game. As on Xbox 360, Audiosurf also supports rumbling.

Audiosurf includes fourteen different characters and player can choose to play any of those characters. Each character has its own unique ability and is placed accordingly in three difficulty levels. The game becomes difficult to play if “Iron Mode” option is activated that immediately terminates the track if any of the three columns are overfilled with blocks. The music in the Audiosurf is played in accordance with the scenario. It automatically adjusts according to the environment it is played in. Very good feature of the game is that if user imports the music file, it is first saved so that it doesn’t takes much time when playing it next time. The original soundtrack was composed by Pedro Macedo Camacho.

Some people think that Audiosurf is similar to Guitar Hero but I am sure after reading this review many-many will be able to frame the differences between two. In Guitar Hero, you need to perform with your guitar but in Audiosurf, player needs to score points by collecting blocks with music running in the background. Though both the games are music themed but they fairly disagree from each other. The game met with a huge success. It got favorable reviews from the gamers and reviewers. Ratings for the game were above average. After all, the game like Audiosurf had never been developed before. It is based on genre completely different from others.
